“Have you found anything yet?” Justine muttered as she scanned the pieces of paper tacked to the bulletin board in the school hallway.
“Nope,” William held multiple papers in his hands and was examining each simultaneously, comparing and contrasting the qualifications and missions. When finished, he would hold onto the best from the group and put the rest back onto the board, replacing them with new papers. “Ryou, how would you describe your enthusiasm levels?”
“Low,” Ryoushin moved his hands distractedly as he read one of the papers on the board. He heard William scoff and saw him from the corners of his eyes hanging a paper back up.
“Daddy said we only needed to do one of these for the marking period, right?” Justine was squinting hard at a paper and she puffed out her cheeks.
“Yes, but it seems that the missions become more and more undesirable as the year goes on…”
        Ryoushin nodded in agreement.
There was a silence between the the trio before Justine tore a paper from the board and spun on her heels to the boys. She held the paper out at an arm’s length, the words facing them. “Haunted houses?”
William plucked the paper from his sister’s fingers and scanned the words quickly. He slowly nodded his head once he was finished. “It seems to be the simplest request on the board.”
Ryoushin read over the paper when William handed it to him and frowned slightly. Anything relatively haunted wasn’t exactly his cup of tea, but it was the simplest request at the moment. He shrugged reluctantly, which the two automatically took for a yes.

The trio stood in front of the supposedly haunted place. William was busy examining the exterior to judge whether or not the place was structurally sound while Justine was busy taking pictures, as was protocol for her. Ryoushin stood a few paces back from William and followed him around the outside of the house. The first thing he noticed was how dark it was inside…
“Everything seems to be in its place,” William nodded curtly and headed up the front steps to the door. Justine followed close behind him, Ryoushin lagging behind. He cleared his throat to get the attention of the other two.
“You don’t think it’s really haunted, do you?”
“Don’t be silly,” William shook his head and opened the front door. “Ghosts are just pawns in scary stories that are told to scare children.”
“Well, it’s working…” Ryoushin grumbled a little to himself as he followed the twins into the house, the door falling shut behind them.

It was awfully dirty inside. The rugs were dusty, each step tossing a grey mist into the air. The interior was illuminated by candlelight; lamps were hanging from the ceilings and walls. It was absolutely silent inside.
“It’s filthy in here…” William complained as he coughed a few times. He wheezed a little. Justine rolled her eyes and hit him hard between his shoulders, causing him to gasp and almost fall over. Ryoushin pulled her hand away before she could hit him again.
“Let’s just get this over with. I don’t want to be here longer than I have to,” Ryoushin pulled away from the two and started walking down the main hallway, carefully placing his feet when he walked so that he never stepped in the darkness. Justine followed close behind while William took up the rear, examining Ryoushin’s walking pattern as they progressed further into the house. Unsurprisingly, Justine quickly advanced in front of the boys and whipped out her camera to take pictures of anything she found interesting, which seemed to be just about everything. William took this as a chance to talk to Ryoushin.
“Ryou, could I have a word with you?”
Ryoushin paused in a patch of candlelight and turned to look at William. He gave him a curt nod and prompted him to continue talking.
“You’ve been displaying some odd behaviours…I need to ask you something,” William adjusted his scarf around his neck and watched Ryoushin’s face for any reactions. When he didn’t notice a shift in the redhead’s mood, he continued. “Do you, by chance, happen to have nyctophobia?”
Ryoushin swallowed a little and looked away, embarrassed. He didn’t offer an answer and continued walking in patches of candlelight. William, taking Ryoushin’s response as a yes, sighed quietly and followed.

The hallway seemed endless. Throughout the walk, William continuously complained about how the inside of the house, specifically the first floor, was abnormally large in comparison to the exterior. Justine was still taking pictures, occasionally oo-ing and ah-ing at her work. Ryoushin, in a rather rotten mood, was walking quietly in front of the two, his hands in the pockets of his lab coat. He froze when he was confronted with an unwelcome sight.
The hallway split before the trio. It branched off into two smaller passages, the one on the left noticeably better lit than the one on the right. Without a second glance, Ryoushin found himself going down the left hallway. William was about to follow before Justine reached out and grabbed his arm.
“We should go that way,” she said, pointing to the right hallway. William looked and frowned.
“We really shouldn’t leave Ryou alone…”
“He’ll be fine. Come on! Besides, we could get this whole mission over with faster if we split up,”
“I don’t think Father would be too happy with us if we did that. I mean, he is our nephew after all...besides, he can’t talk,” William put his hands in his pockets and kicked at the dusty carpet a little. He coughed.
“He’ll be fine! Come on, you baby,” Justine spoke excitedly as she started down the right hallway, her camera poised and ready.
William’s cheeks flared and he furrowed his eyebrows. He turned to his sister’s back and stormed after her angrily. “I’m not a baby!”
       “Suck it and hurry up!”

Ryoushin continued on his way, ignorant to the fact that he was traveling solo. He was contented, but also unnerved, by the silence around him. The brightness in the hallway was nice. The hallway had almost no shadows, spare Ryoushin’s own.
Despite the mellow atmosphere, something in the silence made Ryoushin start to feel horribly uncomfortable. The twins were never this quiet. Ryoushin turned to see what could cause them to be so quiet and froze when he realized they weren’t there. Despite the light, he hated to be alone, especially during a mission in the middle of an old, abandoned house.
Ryoushin turned forward again to see where exactly he was in the hallway. He could see a staircase in front of him, but that was it. The candlelight ceased after the stairwell. Now he was confronted with two options: go back and find his weapons or press forward. The logical thing to do would be to go back, but as he started to go back the same way he came, he froze. He couldn’t go back. Not with all the lights going out.
Panic set in quickly at that point. The candles started to go out slowly, but as they drew closer to Ryoushin’s current position, they went out almost all together. The darkness was creeping down the hallway quickly, and Ryoushin was struggling to pull himself from his current spot. He turned quickly and sprinted up the stairs as the candles on the first floor went out completely, the only light coming from the second floor. However, due to the adrenaline in his veins and the abject terror he was feeling, Ryoushin tripped at the top step, falling flat onto the second floor, his glasses skittering down the hallway. At least there was light, though.
Ryoushin sat up slowly, careful not to agitate his newly injured knee. His heart was pounding against his ribs and his body was shaking, but he managed to crawl over to where his glasses came to rest on the floor. He put them on and looked around slowly, examining the second floor and trying to recuperate from the terrifying experience downstairs. Then, it happened.
        The lights went out.
Ryoushin was unsure how to react at first. He sat in that single spot, motionless, eyes wide. He tried his hardest not to blink for fear of adding to the darkness around him. But he did. He had to. When he opened his eyes again, he felt his skin prick and he shuddered. The longer he stared into the darkness the more nervous he became. He could have sworn he saw the blackness around him moving. And it scared him. He moved back against the floor until he felt his back hit the wall, and he wrapped his arms around himself tightly. He listened to the silence, and he could have sworn he heard something moving against the wooden floors. It was like a scraping sound, but he saw nothing around him. Ryoushin whimpered and clutched at his sleeves tightly, holding his arms closer to his body as if it would protect him with some sort of invisible shield. But it didn’t.
The scraping continued, but it was accompanied by a pair of what seemed to be two little red lights that broke through the darkness. They drew near until Ryoushin looked directly at them. Then they stopped. As did the scraping. Ryoushin whimpered, all the things he could have said were left unsaid and restricted due to the sutures keeping his lips shut. He stared directly at that pair of red lights but he didn’t move. If anything, he tried his hardest to get absorbed into the wall behind him. But as William would say, that would be utterly preposterous.
The lights began to draw nearer at that moment. They grew into what Ryoushin could easily make out to be eyes. A pair of small red eyes set into the face of a horribly mangled human. Presumably female. Her hair was matted and missing in certain places on her head. Her body contorted in inhuman ways as she drew closer to Ryoushin. He pressed his back flat against the wall, his arms extended and gripping at the support behind him. His eyes were wide, tears forming in the corners. He turned his head to look in the direction of the stairs to see if there was any way for him to escape. He would have ran if he hadn’t heard the thumping of something against the carpet downstairs. Soon after he heard the sound, he saw another set of eyes materialize at the bottom of the staircase.
Ryoushin whimpered loudly and shut his eyes tightly from fear. And he did something he never thought he’d be able to do.
        He screamed.

The twins were traveling in silence. Their recent argument had ended, and there was nothing left to complain about. They walked in step, as they always seemed to do. They continued in this fashion until William stopped. Justine stopped soon afterwards.
       “Wha-”
“Sh,” William shot her a glance and listened to seemingly nothing. Justine grunted quietly and crossed her arms, waiting.
       “Justine…”
       “What?”
“...Something’s not right. Something’s really, really not right.”
Justine stared at her brother. He was known around school for being strange, but this was a new high, even for him.
“Well? Out with it,” Justine sighed with exasperation as she watched her brother turn and look in the direction they had come from. Instead of answering her, he took off down the hallway quickly and without hesitation.
“Will!” Justine shouted loudly as she chased her brother down the hallway.

William ran back to the fork in the initial hallway and went down the left passage. The candles started to light before him, making a path for him through the darkness, Justine close behind him. The hallway seemed to extend forever, but soon enough, they found the staircase at the end of the hall. The ascended the staircase quickly and found Ryoushin on the floor, huddled over with his hands clamped over his mouth and his eyes shut tightly. Tears were streaming down his face and his entire body was trembling. He had no response to the sudden lights around him.
“Ryou..?” William knelt down in front of Ryoushin and reached a hand out. Ryoushin pulled away quickly.
       “Don’t touch me..!”
William and Justine stared in disbelief. They’d never heard Ryoushin’s voice before. They thought they never would.
William let out a little whimper and pulled his hand away quickly. Ryoushin opened his eyes slowly, his hands still held over his mouth. He turned his head and looked at William before breaking down into a fit of sobs. Ryoushin moved his hands away from his mouth and reached towards William needily. His palms were dirtied with blood and his upper lip was bleeding from where the stitches once were attached. He reached out and grabbed the front of William’s sweater, causing William to cringe from the feeling of the blood seeping through the fabric of his clothing and onto his skin.
Ryoushin threw himself against William and clung to him desperately, his body shaking with sobs. Justine shifted uncomfortably and looked around, trying to look busy.
“We have to take him home,” William spoke firmly as he found himself wrapping his arms around Ryoushin’s trembling frame. Justine looked at him.
       “But--”
“We are taking him home. We can explain the situation when we get there but we need to get him out of here now, Justine.” William got up and pulled Ryoushin with him. Justine swallowed hard, creating an audible gulp, and nodded. William gave her a stern look before he began to lead Ryoushin down the stairs, Justine following close behind.
